Franklin with a population of 8,477 (2010 census) is the smallest of New Hampshire’s 13 cities. It is located at the junction of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers which join to form the Merrimack River. The abundance of water power led to Franklin’s growth as a mill town in the 19th century. Franklin used to be the shopping center for the surrounding towns but with the growth of shopping malls and changes in travel patterns the downtown stores serve local and specialty markets.
Webster Lake stretches out for 612 acres on the Western edge of town and offers good warm water fishing (perch, pickerel, small mouth bass). There are two different sandy beaches which offer good swimming. State boat ramp is available.
